Around the PIA Western Alliance States

Posted By Administration, Tuesday, November 28, 2017

Arizona — Agribusiness & Economy: The University of Arizona’s Cooperative Extension Economic Impact Analysis Team said agriculture in the state pumps about $23 billion a year in sales into Arizona’s economy. It also brings something like 138,000 jobs — direct and indirect — into the state.

Arizona is among the top producers in the U.S. of lettuce, spinach, broccoli, cantaloupe, honeydew melons and other crops. Some counties are top in the nation when it comes to the production of some of those crops and livestock production.

Even better, a huge percentage of the farms are family owned and run.

California — Worker Injuries: California’s Department of Industrial Relations took information provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and said the state’s occupational and illness data for employer-related injuries stayed the same from 2015 to 2016.

Non-fatal incidents stayed at 3.7 cases per 100 workers for those working full time. It’s the lowest rate in a decade or more. There were 466,600 non-fatal injuries. Most — 78% — occurred in private industry and 22% were in government positions.
