A Holiday Warning — Burglary

Posted By Administration, Monday, December 18, 2017

The holidays. We love them. Homes everywhere are festively decorated and packed with gifts and goodies. Unfortunately, these homes — and your home — are a gold mine for the creative burglar.

A 2017 Ooma.com home security report says 63% of our homes are at risk for burglary. And the loss suffered from a burglary goes deeper than just losing things. The telecommunications company said with a burglary our sense of security goes away as well.

Ooma talked with 1,000 people about how they protect their homes. Company data miners found 16% of that 1,000 have been burglarized. When probed a little deeper, those who’ve been burgled told Ooma the factors they thought contributed to the thefts and the home invasions. Here’s what they said:

Apartments

7% said they live in an apartment

Victims noted fire escapes and sliding doors make for easy access if not properly secured

Burglars can also walk an apartment house corridor and not seem out of place

Apartments tend to be smaller than a house and burglars can cover more territory more quickly

By the way. Most apartment dwellers rent and the Bureau of Justice Statistics say renters have nearly double the number of burglaries.

Open Windows

8% of burglary victims say open windows are how burglars gained access

60% of the 1,000 surveyed say they leave windows open when they are away

15% of the 60% say they simply forget to close them

15% say they leave windows open during warmer weather

An Open Door

14% of burglary victims say the robbery happened because of an unlocked door

The Ooma home security survey found 42% of those burgled leave their doors unlocked when away from home

14% do so because they’re going to return quickly

  12% say they just forget

In 2012 the FBI said 34% of burglars entered homes through an opened door.

Home Security Systems

Just 37% of us — according to Ooma statistics — have home security systems

That puts about six out of 10 of us at risk

Homes without security systems — the FBI says — are 300% more likely to suffer a break in

16% of the burglary victims say they don’t have home security systems

Where You live — the Neighborhood or Surroundings

24% of the people Ooma surveyed say where they live — the neighborhood or surroundings — put them at greater risk

There are — say the experts — ways to protect yourself no matter where you live. A home security system is one. But if that is unaffordable there are other things you can do.

  Lock doors

  Lock windows

Keep lights on inside — that makes it harder to tell if anyone is home or not

More exterior lights make it easier for burglars to be seen
