City Life — Living Comfortably with Under $60k a Year

The cost of living — especially in larger cities — has grown almost unaffordable. Wages definitely aren’t keeping up with living expenses. The Census Bureau points out that the average household income in the U.S. is $57,617 yet we spend — on average — $57,311 a year just to survive.

That doesn’t leave much.

Live in a major city like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland or any number of other Western cities and $57,617 isn’t close to what’s needed. There are — however — four cities in the nine PIA Western Alliance states where you can survive nicely with under $60,000 in income.

Here are the top 13 states for living nicely for under that figure. The PIA Western Alliance cities are in bold:

1. El Paso, Texas

  Cost of necessities: $25,075

  Income needed to live comfortably: $50,150

  Median income: $43,322

2. Detroit, Michigan

3. Albuquerque, New Mexico

  Cost of necessities: $26,692

  Income needed to live comfortably: $55,384

  Median income: $48,127

4. Wichita, Kansas

5. Tucson, Arizona

  Cost of necessities: $27,689

  Income needed to live comfortably: $55,379

  Median income: $37,973

6. Las Vegas, Nevada

  Cost of necessities: $28,304

  Income needed to live comfortably: $56,609

  Median income: $50,822

7. Louisville, Kentucky

8. Memphis, Tennessee

9. Tulsa, Oklahoma

10. Indianapolis, Indiana

11. San Antonio, Texas

12. Fresno, California

  Cost of necessities: $29,308

  Income needed to live comfortably: $58,616

  Median income: $41,842

 

13. Columbus, Ohio
