The Top P&C Insurance Groups

Every year National Underwriter — using data from S&P Global Market Intelligence — produces the Top 100 and Heads of the Lines list.

Steven Weisbart is the senior vice president and chief economist for the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.). This report’s focus is 2017 and Weisbart said in 2017 nearly every major line of insurance saw more dollars leave than were taken into the company coffers.

Here are the top 20 of the top100 groups for 2017 ranked by net premiums written. In the top 10 only two changed places. They are USAA and Nationwide. Other than that, the top 10 stayed the same:

1. State Farm

Percentage of growth: 3.58%

Combined ratio 2017: 109.86

Combined ratio 2016: 108.70

Percentage change: 1.17

2. Berkshire Hathaway

Rank 2016 — 2

Net written premiums: $46,006,795

Percentage of growth: 18.63%

Combined ratio 2017: 102.25

Combined ratio 2016: 95.00

Percentage change: 7.26

3. Allstate

Rank 2016 — 3

Net written premiums: $30,560,792

Percentage of growth: 2.33%

Combined ratio 2017: 94.90

Combined ratio 2016: 96.78

Percentage change: -1.87

4. Liberty Mutual

Rank 2016 — 4

Net written premiums: $28,625,043

Percentage of growth: 7.40%

Combined ratio 2017: 110.34

Combined ratio 2016: 102.48

Percentage change: 7.86

5. Progressive

Rank 2016 — 5

Net written premiums: $27,134,228

Percentage of growth: 16.17%

Combined ratio 2017: 98.13

Combined ratio 2016: 95.27

Percentage change: -2.09

6. Travelers Companies

Rank 2016 — 6

Net written premiums: $24,464,954

Percentage of growth: 4.82%

Combined ratio 2017: 97.21

Combined ratio 2016: 91.81

Percentage change: 5.40

7. USAA

Rank 2016 — 8

Net written premiums: $19,607,612

Percentage of growth: 10.60%

Combined ratio 2017: 104.86

Combined ratio 2016: 106.58

Percentage change: -1.72

8. Nationwide Mutual Group

Rank 2016 — 7

Net written premiums: $18,871,828

Percentage of growth: -2.34%

Combined ratio 2017: 113.32

Combined ratio 2016: 107.66

Percentage change: 5.66

9. American International Group (AIG)

Rank 2016 — 9

Net written premiums: $14,188,850

Percentage of growth: -12.78%

Combined ratio 2017: 127.56

Combined ratio 2016: 131.49

Percentage change: -3.93

10. Farmers Insurance Group of Companies

Rank 2016 — 10

Net written premiums: $14,184,740

Percentage of growth: -3.91%

Combined ratio 2017: 103.49

Combined ratio 2016: 105.38

Percentage change: -1.89
