The California Legislature has passed a bill — and it was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom — that says private citizens can file lawsuits against anyone importing, distributing, manufacturing, or selling illegal firearms.
The law is modeled after an anti-abortion law passed in Texas.
If someone is found guilty of breaking the new law, they can be given a $10,000 fine for each violation. They’ll also have to pay all attorneys fees. The gun law was introduced by Democrat State Senator Bob Hertzberg.
He called it a moral imperative.
“For the sake of our children, this is a common-sense step toward ensuring California streets, schools and communities continue to be among the safest in the nation,” Hertzberg said. “If Texas is going to use this legal framework to essentially outlaw abortion and harm women, all with the Supreme Court’s blessing, California is going to use it to save lives and take AR15s off our streets.”
