Around the PIA Western Alliance States – Week of May 20, 2024

California — DA says USAA, Progressive Cheating on Auto Claims: Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price has filed a lawsuit against USAA and Progressive. She says they have violated the state’s insurance code, the unfair competition law and the state’s false advertising law.

The suit claims the insurers and their valuation vendors are knowingly manipulating market value reports to produce actual cash value valuations that are understated by thousands of dollars.

That is detrimental to consumers.

The complaint alleges that the insurance companies will declare a vehicle a total loss whether it is more economical to repair it or not. They can then take the title and auction the vehicle for salvage and get back some of the payout given to the insured.
