Mercury Insurance looked at comprehensive auto insurance claims from just before the onset of the COVID pandemic to today. Claims have risen 40%. Northern California is seeing twice as many claims as Southern California but both halves of the state are struggling.
The company says Northern California’s smaller population is the reason.
Much of the comprehensive claim increase is from theft. Mercury VP and head claims officer, Randy Petro says these are the five most popular vehicles to steal.
“Thieves love the Toyota Prius,” he said. “The frequency of claims for this vehicle compared to the other vehicles on the list is nearly double. If you own a Prius, be extra careful of where you park and what you keep in it.”
Data issued from the National Insurance Crime Bureau finds California is the state with the most car thefts. Since 2019 they’ve gone up by 24%.
Mercury says the pandemic saw a big increase in auto theft and vandalism. Audio parts and other car parts are being targeted. Almost 22% of the claims are from theft that happened at night.
“Thieves have been waiting for this moment,” Petro noted. “Staying vigilant and keeping in mind good practices when you leave your vehicle can help reduce the likelihood of your car being stolen or damaged. Comprehensive coverage provides that extra peace of mind knowing you will be covered from theft or vandalism.”
