Auto Thefts — On the Rise

Auto thefts are on the rise. The insurance rate finder, QuoteWizard took a look at stolen auto statistics and noted the number stolen in 2019 was 800,000.

In 2020 that figure rose to 875,000.

The 75,000 jump in a year is a lot. QuoteWizard said 10 states have seen a 25% or more rise in auto thefts in the last 10 years. Four of those 10 states are the PIA Western Alliance states of Alaska, New Mexico, Montana and Oregon. They rank number 1, 2, 6 and 7.

Here are QuoteWizard’s statistics:

1. Alaska

Change in auto thefts over the last decade: 98%

Thefts per 100,000 people in 2019: 358

Thefts per 100,000 people average over 10-years: 326

2. New Mexico

Change in auto thefts over the last decade: 79%

Thefts per 100,000 people in 2019: 427

Thefts per 100,000 people average over 10-years: 381

3. Colorado

4. Kentucky

5. South Dakota

6. Montana

Change in auto thefts over the last decade: 44%

Thefts per 100,000 people in 2019: 222

Thefts per 100,000 people average over 10-years: 209

7. Oregon

Change in auto thefts over the last decade: 41%

Thefts per 100,000 people in 2019: 360

Thefts per 100,000 people average over 10-years: 301

8. North Dakota
