Following the lead of California Governor Gavin Newsom, California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara talked extensively with first responders, fire safety experts and researchers to come up with a new plan to battle wildfire.
The bottom-line of the program seems to be to push insurers to lower premiums for homeowners who participate. Lara said this is the first time state agencies have been brought together to identify mitigation actions that insurance companies should consider for existing homes and businesses.
The commissioner said the plan is called Safer for Wildfires. He said it contains a list of what achievable, effective actions that will help reduce risk for property owners. Those actions include community-wide safety recommendations to prevent the spread of wildfire to other properties.
“I am using every tool available to protect Californians while reducing the risk of wildfires,” Lara said. “Making homes and businesses safer from wildfires protects all Californians, saving lives, reducing losses, and making insurance more available and affordable for all.”
These are the agencies involved:
The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) The Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) The Governor’s Office of Planning and Research (OPR) The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC)
