The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) just released a very interesting statistic. You might even call it shocking. And since most of us never see statistics like this, who knew?
The CDC did a study of blood samples that have been gathered since the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic. It found 58% of us have been infected with the coronavirus since the pandemic began in March of 2020. Even more shocking is the number of children the CDC says have been infected with COViD.
That number is 74%.
This is the first time over half of us have been infected. Before Omicron hit in December of last year, just a third of us had contracted the disease. The new survey finds that Omicron drove the numbers of infected up in every age group.
However, unvaccinated children and adolescents saw the biggest increase.
Study co-author Kristie Clarke said figures from December of 2021 to February of this year show 75.2% of children 11 and younger had COVID antibodies in their blood. That’s up from 44.2% from September of 2021. For kids 12 to 17, the figure is 74.2% and that’s up from 45.6% from September to December of last year.
People 65 and over had the lowest number of infections.
“Having infection-induced antibodies does not necessarily mean you are protected against future infection,” Clarke said. “We did not look at whether people had a level of antibodies that provides protection against reinfection or severe disease.”
By the way, over 66% of the U.S. population is fully vaccinated against COVID and close to 46% of us have gotten the booster shot.
