CREW.Org — New Earthquake Education & Insurance Tools

Late last year, CREW.org did a survey with insurance agents about how — or if — they talked with their clients about the need to be covered in case of an earthquake. As you know, like flood insurance, homeowners insurance does not cover damages that come from an earthquake.

The organization has just released three new outreach & education tools to help raise awareness about earthquakes, preparing for one, and on earthquake insurance. The first is a brochure will be especially useful to insurance agents when they discuss earthquake risk and insurance options with consumers.

Here are the three items:

1. A brochure (print and digital versions) about common kinds of earthquake damage to homes, likely costs, and retrofit options.

2. Two new social media graphics that encourage preparedness and consideration of earthquake insurance: one features small business preparedness; the other home preparedness.

3. A print-ready “Recovery Plan” poster and postcard featuring QR-codes that lead to further information and resources.

The brochure is available as a PDF in several formats including English and Spanish, and all of which can be downloaded from the Insure Against Earthquakes site, so it may be easiest to direct readers to the “Featured Outreach Products” section:

Last year, CREW.org did a survey of agents and found from time-to-time agents will get questions about earthquake insurance. Here are those statistics.

43% — Occasionally

40% — Rarely

10% — Frequently

7% — Never

While agent questions about earthquake insurance is fairly low, the responding agents said consumers do want to know about being insured from natural perils. Here are those numbers.

30% — Wildfire

24% — Flood

17% — Wind

17% — Earthquake

6% — Hail

6% — Other

The PIA Western Alliance sent information to our member agents and agencies about the survey and about the results of the survey. You can view and download CREW’s publication of the survey results here — https://crew.org/eq-insurance-agents-survey/

“The low statistics showing EQ isn’t offered enough to the agent customer base has us wondering if we aren’t offering enough education on the subject,” PIA Western Alliance Executive Vice President Kim Legato said. “From a consumer point of view, earthquake insurance seems quite expensive — and, maybe — not that necessary. I get that. That’s where the work of PIA can assist agents in better understanding the complexities of the product so their clients see the value.”

That’s the main purpose of the brochures.

“It’s important to convey to consumers to think that suffering a loss without the coverage far outweighs the premium or deductible,” she added. “This is why the PIA will continue to be a leader in quality education to the agent community. Our aim is to enlighten, inform and educate agents so they can sell the product with confidence without hesitation.”
