Four Insurers Among the Best Workplaces for Women
McKinsey & Company and LeanIn.Org did a survey of 400,000 people between 2015 and 2022 and asked about their workplace experiences. The two companies had lots of questions for those workers. One of the more important ones had to do with the opportunity for advancement for younger women professionals.
Two-thirds of the women under 30 said they want to move into senior positions in their companies. Not lost on those women is how the corporate culture of some firms is pushing women out of those senior leadership roles.
Here’s what McKinsey and LeanIn found to be the reasons those women are being pushed out of those positions.
DIFFICULTY ADVANCING IN THE COMPANY
The report said many women aspiring to senior roles in a company experience micro-aggression that men do not. That makes it harder for them to advance. The women interviewed say they are twice as likely to be mistaken for a junior leader in the company than their male counterparts.
Another disturbing statistic shows that 37% of the women interviewed said a male counterpart has taken credit for an idea they had.
DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION
The women leaders talked with by the two firms said they are twice as likely to spend significant time on DEI issues in their company. Of those noting that problem, 40% say they are not thanked for the effort, nor is there any acknowledgement of that work in performance reviews.
That kind of work is difficult and 43% of the women leaders surveyed said they feel burned out.
THE OVERALL JOB CULTURE
A company’s commitment to DEI and to job flexibility are two of the major factors that have led many women to seek new jobs. When it comes to staying or leaving a company, job flexibility is a top consideration for a third of those surveyed.
Women are much more likely than men to leave a job and go to another over DEI issues.
