Goodbye Jenny Craig

America is obese. Studies and statistics everywhere show a population that is growing heavier every year. This story won’t address those issues.

The purpose of this story is to announce the closure of one of the weight-loss pioneers, and a company that has helped thousands of people lose weight and keep weight off. Jenny Craig is closing its doors — forever.

The company first opened its doors in March of 1983. With some timely and excellent promoting, and lots of luck, Jenny Craig became a household word, and for four decades has helped people lose weight.

The results were not cheap. Weight loss under Jenny Craig was $420 to $860 a month and a minimum of $10 a day.

In a statement, Jenny Craig noted last week that it would permanently close its Carlsbad, California headquarters on June 24th and layoff its 146 employees. “While the Company is making best efforts to secure the additional financing required to continue operations, it may need to close the Carlsbad Facility as early as May 5, 2023, in which case the Separation Date would be the date of the closure,” the statement said.

The company owned centers where people do their timely weigh-ins, pick up meals and work with coaches have already begun closing. Many franchise stores — however — are remaining open.

All that said, Jenny Craig hasn’t owned Jenny Craig since 2003 when she and her husband, Sidney sold all their shares to Nestle.
