Mergers & Acquisitions in 2021 — 4th Busiest in a Decade

Clyde & Co. says 2021’s mergers and acquisitions worldwide were the most we’ve seen in the last decade. In 2021 there were 418 of them compared to 407 in 2020.

That’s a 2.7% jump.

The company says the most impressive number in the M&A deals in 2021 were those called mega deals. Spokesman Ivor Edwards said they are valued at $1 billion or more and 2021 saw 25 of them compared to 20 in 2020.

As anticipated, the volume of insurance M&A activity worldwide picked up notably in 2021,” Edwards said. Despite the pandemic continuing to shape the economic and political landscape, investor sentiment strengthened in most regions as re/insurers rode the wave of rising prices across all product lines to generate healthy top-line growth.”

Over half of the deals Clyde & Co. refer to were done in the United States. Activity here rose 17% compared to 2020. There were 180 of them and that is the most deals done in this country since 2015.

The company also predicts mergers and acquisitions will be very active in 2020. Clyde & Co. think we’ll see over 200 of them in the first half and more than 220 in the second half of this year.
