One for the Books — California Fire Department Can’t Get Fire Insurance

Here’s one for the books. Governor Gavin Newsom has requested an additional $11 million to replace a kitchen at one of the state’s fire stations. Apparently, the bonds Cal Fire normally uses to pay for such projects can’t be used.

The why is ironic.

An analyst from California’s Finance Department told a Senate budget committee subcommittee that the project won’t happen because Cal Fire can’t get fire insurance for the facility.

“The insurance industry, they weren’t interested in selling insurance policies in the region due to the perceived fire risk in the area,” the analyst told the members of the subcommittee.

As you’d expect, the response was total shock from members of the committee and Republican Sen. Brian Dahle summed up the feelings of both parties.

“We can’t get fire insurance at a fire station that’s going to be manned by firefighters,” Dahle said. “That’s where we are in California. That to me is crazy.”
