The Identify Theft Resource Center (ITRC) does a very good job tracking data breaches and how they impact people and businesses. The center recently released a report stating data breaches rose 14% in the first quarter of 2022 when compared to the same quarter in 2021.
Oddly, while incidents rose in the first quarter of this year, ITRC CEO Eva Velaquez said the total number of people impacted by those incidents dropped dramatically. In the first quarter of 2022 the numbers dropped 50% over 2021’s first quarter and they are down 41% from the fourth quarter of last year.
“Traditionally, Q1 is the lowest number of data compromises reported each year,” she said. “The fact the number of breach events in Q1 represents a double-digit increase over the same time last year is another indicator that data compromises will continue to rise in 2022 after setting a new all-time high in 2021.”
She blames the 2021 data breach jump on cyber attacks aimed at identity fraud.
“It is vital everyone continues to practice good cyber hygiene, businesses and consumers, to help reduce the amount of personal information flowing into the hands of cyber thieves,” Velasquez noted.
The FBI has released statistics on which states have been hardest hit by data fraud. Two of them — California and Washington — are PIA Western Alliance states. California tops the list and Washington is number 10.
