The Joint PIA Washington-IIABW Conference — The Last Minute is Here!

The Professional Independent Agents of Washington (PIA) and the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of Washington (IIABW) have held a joint conference in Washington since 2011.

It’s the only event of its kind each year in Washington.

This year’s conference is September 11-13 at one of Washington’s most beautiful resorts, the Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum. It’s there that agents, brokers, CSRs and company marketing reps from all over the Northwest will be attending the annual event.

On September 11th the PIA Washington holds its annual board meeting at 3pm and the welcome reception is later that day at 5:30pm. The real work starts on Monday.

The morning starts off with breakfast with the exhibitors at 8:30.

The annual general session starts at 10am and it deals with one of the most important issues facing many agencies and companies. It’s titled:

Hiring and Staff Development: Hiring, Training & Compensation

From noon to 1:30 pm is lunch with the exhibitors.                     

On Monday from 1:30-4:30pm is a class titled, Ethics Baby. Veronica Stevens of Cochrane and Company teaches the class and it is worth 3 CE and ethics credits.

Ethics Baby!!! Three amazing true stories starring cops, wanna-be cops, and attorneys with ethical dilemmas at every turn. You won’t want to miss this class. Film clips are included and audience participation is a must!!

Veronica has been a big supporter of the Joint conference over the years, helping us both arrange speakers and presenting herself. Veronica has worked at Cochrane & Co since 1982.

From 4:30 to 6pm is happy hour with the exhibitors.

Texas Hold ‘Em and Bingo is the evenings entertainment starting at 7:30pm.

Tuesday, September 13th

9:30 – 10:30 AM — Current Legislative Issues with Representative Chris Corry  (1 CE)

This session includes an update on the credit scoring proposed rule and possible legislation for next legislative session.

It also includes a report on the status of the proposed transparency rule, the Washington Cares Act and other health care issues.

Here’s information on Rep. Chris Corry.

Sworn into office in 2019, he represents the 14th Legislative District in the state legislature. Corry has worked in the insurance industry for over fourteen years. Chris advises clients on risk management and how best to protect their employees and businesses. A volunteer with a variety of non-profits, such as the West Valley Citizens for better schools, he is also a board member of SW Rotary and Crime Stoppers of Yakima County. He has a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Washington.

10:30- 11:30 AM — The Current and Future State of the Insurance Industry with Tyler Asher, Safeco and Steve Patterson, Oregon Mutual (1 hour CE)

This panel will discuss a number of issues from prepared questions and also questions from the audience. Issues that will be discussed include:

  • *Insurance trends
  • *Credit scoring, transparency, and other proposed laws/regulations
  • *Telematics
  • *Future underwriting trends
  • *Impact of the pandemic on the insurance industry
  • *Impact of big data on customers
  • *Future of insurtechs in the industry

 Tyler Asher is the president of Safeco Insurance which is part of Liberty Mutual. Asher most recently was Safecos vice president, Distribution Insights, where he led strategy, planning, and innovation, in addition to managing operational and advanced analytics. During his nearly 18-year career with Safeco, Asher has served in a variety of roles spanning finance, accounting, management reporting, and analysis.

Steven Patterson works as an Executive Vice President at Oregon Mutual Insurance, which is an Insurance company with an estimated 122 employees; and was founded in 1894. They are part of the Executive team within the C-Suite Department and their management level is VP-Level. Steven is currently based in McMinnville, United States.

At 1pm is the annual golf tournament.
