Memorial Day weekend is coming. And with it are warnings of roads packed with autos and dangerous driving conditions. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is one of the groups issuing warnings.
The NHTSA emphasized road dangers noting that 42,915 people died in crashes in the U.S. in 2021. It’s a 10.5% jump over 2020’s total of 38,824, and the highest reported number since 2005.
In 2019 the fatalities totaled 36,355.
Street, road and highway deaths rose in 44 of the 50 states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. They’re all projected to see even more deaths on streets and highways in 2022.
Texas had the most deaths at 4,573.
The PIA Western Alliance state of California was second with 4,258. Florida was third with 3,753 deaths.
Russ Martin of the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) said, ”An increase in dangerous driving — speeding, distracted driving, drug- and alcohol-impaired driving, not buckling up — during the pandemic, combined with roads designed for speed instead of safety, has wiped out a decade and a half of progress in reducing traffic crashes, injuries and deaths.”
As noted earlier, the NHTSA broke down deaths and increases for each state. Here are the stats for the nine PIA Western Alliance states:
Washington 2020 fatalities — 560 2021 fatalities — 652 Percentage of changes — 16.4%
