Insurance Education Program for Legislative Candidates Begins

PIAO/I is once again organizing a series of individual meetings with newly appointed state legislators and legislative candidates and the Oregon insurance lobby.  We want to educate them about the insurance industry and some of the issues we face during legislative sessions.

Click here for a list of those we have invited.  Although we’re just getting started, already eleven individual programs have been scheduled.  If you would like to attend a particular meeting, please let me know.  You would be welcome!

Earthquake Insurance Workgroup

PIAO/I has been attending the lengthy series of meetings of the SB 850 Earthquake Insurance Workgroup. The mission of the workgroup is to investigate issues related to provision of earthquake insurance to residential property owners, and mass care and displacement.

Click here for results of a data call requested by the Department of Consumer and Business Services.  The headline number is that the uptake rate for earthquake policies in Oregon was 14.8%.

We don’t think the recommendation of the workgroup will be to mandate coverage or offering coverage, or to establish an agency like the California Earthquake Authority.  The recommendations will more likely focus on retrofitting of homes, need for more public education about earthquake insurance, and the like.

You can read more about Oregon earthquake-related legislation at

https://www.wsspc.org/public-policy/legislation/oregon/.

It’s important that PIAO/I members remember to talk with your customers about the opportunity and need for earthquake coverage.

Autonomous Vehicles Workgroup

PIAO/I is also attending two of the Autonomous Vehicles Workgroup subcommittees: Insurance and Liability Subcommittee, and Law Enforcement and Crash Reporting Subcommittee.  The subcommittees are researching federal law and laws from other states and recommending how Oregon should shape its policies on testing and implementation of autonomous vehicles.

Please Donate to PAC

Please send a contribution to PIA-Oregon-PAC so we can support state legislative races for those we know will listen to our messages.  Send to Sue Smith, PIA Western Alliance, 3205 NE 78th St. Suite 104, Vancouver, WA 98665.  We will greatly appreciate it!  It’s important to our legislative efforts.

Thanks, Lana
