A 2026 Concern — Business Owners Rethinking Insurance

Nationwide took a small and mid-sized business survey at the end of 2025 and asked businesses to look into 2026. The survey found businesses to be optimistic about 2026 though many were worried about rising costs and pressures in the workplace.
Costs have risen and pressures continue.
Company Senior Vice President and Small Commercial leader, George Williams said this is pushing how small and mid-sized businesses view risk to their business which, in turn, has insurance entering the picture.
"Business owners are not pulling back from growth, but they are becoming more intentional about how they deploy capital and manage risk,” Williams said. "In this environment, agents who lead with economic insight, industry expertise and proactive risk guidance —not just premium comparisons — will be the ones who strengthen relationships and help clients navigate both cost pressure and emerging exposures with confidence.”
The Nationwide survey found:
• 50% of businesses trying to renegotiate or switch carriers
• 33% have delayed policy purchases or canceled some optional coverages
• 90% are putting pressure on agents to cut premium costs
