A Fit for Halloween Survey — Buying a Haunted House
Published October 28, 2025 at 2:00 PM · News Releases and Bulletins

Rocket Mortgage did a home shopping survey and found 65% of us would think seriously about buying a haunted house. Of that 65%, a scary 39% say they’d definitely do it and 26% say they’re open to the idea.
Of the 1,037 people responding to the survey, a frightening 23% say they are currently living in a haunted house and 13% say they’ve lived in one. And only 18% say they’d bag things and sell a haunted house if they found out it was haunted.
And how do you handle living in one? Of those surveyed, 41% say they’d try to make friends with the ghost, or whatever entity it is haunting the home, and they’d dig into the reasons the place is haunted.
The 30% living in haunted homes they say “might be haunted” say they haven’t experienced any hauntings personally. Of those that have:
- 64% have felt a strong presence
- 61% hear mysterious noises
- 49% have heard unaccountable footsteps
- 37% have seen apparitions
- 24% have seen objects move on their own
- 43% said the ghosts have been friendly
- 20% found them mischievous
- 18% said they were spooky
- 8% found them to be angry
People shopping for a new home and encountering one that is haunted want a deal.
- 40% want 40% to 59% off the asking price
- 29% would take the home for a 20% to 39% price cut
- 15% say they’d take it for 20% off
There’s more:
- If the place is totally creepy, it’s no deal
- So is a death on the property that caused the haunting
- But a haunted house next to a cemetery is no big deal
- All that said, a big discount for the home gets a sign on the dotted-line
Once moving in, some will want to do away with the entity haunting the place.
- 37% say they’d do a ghost eviction with salt, sage or an exorcism
- 40% say they’d just cohabitate
