A Frightening New Mexico Flood — 3 Dead, 200 Homes Damaged

Flooding has hit the Southwest hard. Most of the focus is on flooding in Texas where over 130 people have lost their lives and hundreds of homes and businesses submerged under hard flowing flood waters.

When this story was written on Monday, July 14th, officials in Texas were predicting more rain.

The flooding isn’t just in Texas. The Southeaster New Mexico mountain village of Ruidoso was hit by a flash flood last week. So far the flood has officially killed three — two children and an adult — and damaged over 200 homes. The search for more victims continues.

New Mexico Governor Lujan Grisham took a tour of the city and has asked for — and received — a federal emergency declaration which will open up federal relief. “We will continue working with the federal government for every dollar and resource necessary to help this resilient community fully recover from these devastating floods,” she said.

Monsoon rains last Tuesday afternoon caused the flooding. On July 14th, weather officials warned more flooding could be on the way as more heavy rain is entering the area.

“There are no words that can take away that devastation,” the governor said. “We are truly heartsick.”

She said the federal government will send $15 million immediately to get the recovery started. The governor predicts as much as $100 million will eventually be needed to help make the mountain village and its residents, whole.
