California Governor & Legislature Gearing Up for Trump Presidency — $25 Million Needed

California Governor Gavin Newsom wants the California Legislature to authorize his spending $25 million to fight the more aggressive policies being proposed by President-elect Donald Trump.
With that money Newsom will hire a lot of lawyers.
The special session began last Monday and — at the time this story is being written — no decisions have been made but Senate President Pro Tempore Mike McGuire says the plan is to get authorization for a wave of court challenges.
“We’re in the calm before the storm,” McGuire said. “Believe me, the hurricane force winds are about to hit this nation, and especially California and other like-minded states.”
While this might sound shocking to the more conservative readers of this publication, one has to note that California sued the first Trump administration 120 times and won a few cases. The most notable are the preservation of the state’s strict vehicle emission standards and a suit to protect the legal status of immigrants who came to the U.S. as children.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta said he expects the Legislature to ultimately approve the money but he calls it a downpayment since California spent $42 million on lawsuits during the first Trump administration.
“The $25 million is a start; it’s a down payment,” Bonta said. “It’s the beginning, not the end.”
The issue raising the most alarms in California is Trump’s stance on immigration and his stance on ramping up deportations of immigrants in the country illegally.
