California, Oregon, Washington & New Mexico and the Clean Car Coalition
Published June 3, 2025 at 1:14 PM · News Releases and Bulletins

A couple of weeks ago Congress voted to ban California’s ban on the sale of gas-powered cars after 2035. We don’t have word yet as to whether President Trump has signed the bill into law or not. If he hasn’t already, he is expected to do so.
After complaining vociferously about Congress’ decision, officials in California joined an 11-state coalition that calls itself the Affordable Clean Cars Coalition. The coalition is led by the U.S. Climate Alliance which — in turn — is a coalition of 24 governors.
The PIA Oregon states of Oregon, Washington and New Mexico are also a part of that group.
The Affordable Clean Cars Coalition is pushing for a transition to cleaner vehicles while also supporting U.S. auto manufacturers and workers, and preserving the clean air authority of the states.
“The federal government and Congress are putting polluters over people and creating needless chaos for consumers and the market, but our commitment to safeguarding Americans’ fundamental right to clean air is resolute,” the group has stated. “We will continue collaborating as states and leveraging our longstanding authority under the Clean Air Act, including through state programs that keep communities safe from pollution, create good-paying jobs, increase consumer choice, and help Americans access cleaner and more affordable cars.”
The other states participating in the coalition are Colorado, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island.
