California — Safeco Urges Independent Agents to Move Renewals to Mercury

Published August 12, 2025 at 1:41 PM · News Releases and Bulletins

Liberty Mutual owns Safeco. The company is winding down the number of auto, condo and renter policies it writes and renews in California. Last week, Liberty Mutual told the independent agents to move their Safeco renewals to Mercury Insurance so those needing auto, condo or rental insurance will have uninterrupted coverage.

Mercury’s CEO Gabriel Tirador said the two companies have always worked well together.

“Mercury and Safeco have long had a healthy, competitive relationship, sharing a common desire to protect California consumers,” he said. "When Safeco approached us with the idea of transitioning their impacted customers into our portfolio, we saw an opportunity for Mercury to be there for California consumers and agents when they need us most. The result is a win for everyone — their customers and agents, Safeco and Mercury.”

Liberty Mutual’s president of independent agent distribution said his company is committed to independent agents and calls them critical to achieving his firm’s sustained success.

“This partnership with Mercury ensures they [independent agencies and agents] and our customers have a seamless path available for uninterrupted coverage as we focus on our core auto, home, landlord and liability products throughout the state,” he said.
