Cheech & Chong & California’s THC Rule

Published October 1, 2024 at 2:18 PM · News Releases and Bulletins

A lot of middle age and younger people know of Cheech Marin from the movies. He was in a lot of them in the 1980s, 1990s and into the 2000s. Marin — it turns out — is a pretty good actor in a limited role.

His great claim to fame — however — is part of the comedy duo, Cheech and Chong. They were really popular with a lot of younger people and hippie types during the late 1960s and into the 1970s. Their schtick was mostly drug humor.

That is if you find drug humor humorous. Some old-timers did and some didn’t.

Way before California voters legalized marijuana, Cheech and Chong formed Cheech and Chong’s Cannabis Company. The original idea was to change the perception of the public about marijuana.

Today the company has stepped right into the times and not only educates, but it sells pot products.

The California Legislature recently passed Assembly Bill 45. It went into effect on September 23rd. The bill is an emergency regulation that is in effect until March of 2025. It bans the sale of consumable hemp products that contain THC or other products deemed intoxicating.

Cheech and Chong do not find the bill to be funny, and Cheech and Chong’s Cannabis Company has filed a lawsuit seeking to stop the enforcement of the bill until cooler heads can take a deeper look at the issue.

The company calls the bill “draconian.” The suit says. “It’s akin to requiring candy to stop containing sugar … starting tomorrow.”
