Cyber Crime Complaints — A Growing Problem for PIA Western Alliance States

Citizens from all over the country are experiencing attacks from cyber criminals. Last year the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center said it received 880,400 complaints. That’s up 10% over 2022 and set a new record.
Most experts don’t doubt another record will be set in 2024.
As you know, not only are complaints up but so are losses. They’re expected to hit $12 billion this year.
FBI Executive Assistant Director Timothy Langan says those are only the dollars lost reported by those impacted by cyber criminals. He suspects the numbers might be much higher than those.
“Consider that when the FBI recently infiltrated the Hive ransomware group’s infrastructure, we found that only about 20% of Hive’s victims reported to law enforcement,” Langan said in the IC3’s 2023 internet crimes report. “More reporting from victims would mean superior insight for the FBI.”
The most complaints in the country were registered in the PIA Western Alliance state of California. The association’s states of Arizona and Washington are also in the top-10 with Arizona ranked 6th and Washington 10th.
The slideshow reviews the states that had the most cybercrime complaints in 2023. The FBI noted that counts show how many complaints were received from each state, not the number of individuals filing a complaint and duplicates may have occurred.
