Distracted driving kills nine people a day in the U.S.
LexisNexis Risk Solutions took a look at distracted driving data and determined tickets issued for distracted driving is Vacup. Comparing 2025’s first three quarters with 2022’s first three quarters, the NexisLexis group found a 57% increasing in distracted driving violations.
And this isn’t just young people addicted to their phones.
Drivers between the ages of 16 and 25 had a 48% increase in distracted driving violations. There was a 70% jump in violations for the 36 to 45 group and a 79% increase by those over age 66.
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) President David Harkey said many people caught speeding are more than likely on their cell phones.
“Until now, safety experts believed drivers used their cellphones most at slower speeds,” Harkey said. “But data from insurance companies’ safe-driving apps show that, in free-flowing traffic, the opposite is true.”
His group found on limited access roads, for every 5 miles per hour over the speed limit phone usage rose by 12%. Arterials and roads connecting towns saw a 3% increase.
Roads with a 70mph speed limit saw a 9% increase for every 5 mph.
