Employee Loyalty — A Non-Existent Quality

Published January 27, 2026 at 1:37 PM · News Releases and Bulletins

A survey by Southeastern Oklahoma State University says most of your employees are looking to leave.

Dr. Rhonda Richards, dean at the John Massey School of Business, led the survey and said, sadly, 70% of workers stay on the job longer than they want because they can’t figure out how to leave. Another question on the survey found 68% hiding their plan to change careers from their employer.

Stress is the reason half want to leave. Burnout and emotional exhaustion has 49% looking for the door. Poor pay and benefits have 37% wanting to leave and no possible upward mobility is the reason 32% want to go.

Here’s more:

  • 24% of employees who left their current job did so for more meaningful work
  • 23% want to work remotely
  • 20% are looking for better work-life balance
  • 12% leave because of limited growth opportunity

And 4% didn’t want to be there in the first place.

“Younger workers, including 73% of millennials and 71% of Gen Z reported staying in a role longer than they wanted because they did not know how to make the transition,” the survey pointed out. “To make matters more complex, 42% said they had been discouraged by family or friends from pursuing a new career path, showing how social pressures can slow down career decisions.”
