Fireworks — Big Business in the PIA Western Alliance States

Published July 15, 2025 at 1:52 PM · News Releases and Bulletins

At the time this is being written, it is 10 days since the Independence Day holiday weekend. You wouldn’t know the celebration is over because no doubt many of you are still hearing, and seeing, explosions on a nightly basis.

For those with pets that are seriously frightened of the noise, we feel badly for them and for you. Considering that the “celebration” began almost a week before Friday, July 4th, those pets, and you have pretty much had enough.

For those of you just plain tired of all the noise, we feel sorry for you, as well.

All that said, fireworks is big business, and not just for Independence Day. The cities and states of the United States import 96.3% of all fireworks from China. Missouri has the highest per-capita imports of fireworks.

In 2024, Missouri imported $85.7 million in fireworks. That’s $13.84 per resident. People in Kansas and Nebraska are second and third in consumption. They spend a lot less and are in single digits per person numbers. The fewest purchases are in Massachusetts, North Carolina and Minnesota.

People in New York purchase more high end fireworks than people in other states.
