July 4th — Celebrating Patriotism in America

Published June 24, 2025 at 2:01 PM · News Releases and Bulletins

We’re approaching the Independence Day holiday weekend on July 4th. While many are setting off fireworks like maniacs, the consumer website, WalletHub wondered which states in the country are the most patriotic.

Another topic for another day, how many people doing the independence day celebration actually know what country the U.S. gained its independence from. A survey done by a few years ago showed just a quarter of us actually know that answer.

WalletHub’s Chip Lupo said Virginia claims the honor of being the most patriotic, but three PIA Western Alliance states — Montana, Oregon and Washington — find themselves in the top-10 most patriotic. The determination came from 13 key indicators of patriotism like the number of military enlistees in a state, the number of veterans, how many voted in the 2024 election and so on.

“The most patriotic states have a lot of residents who serve or have served in the armed forces, high voter turnouts during elections, and a high share of the population volunteering with national or local organizations,” Lupo said. “Patriotism also isn’t concentrated in any one particular area – the top states are located in vastly different geographic regions."

He said the blue states have an average rank of 28.13 and are — at least statistically — more patriotic than the red states who average 21.21.

These are the most patriotic states according to the WalletHub survey. We gave Virginia’s statistics and the statistics of the three PIA Western Alliance states in the top-10:
