July is National Grilling Month — BBQ Safety Tips

We’re halfway through July and we’re remiss for not giving you this story a couple of weeks ago. Apparently, the Weekly Industry News editorial staff was too busy doing its own grilling to get the story done.

Here’s the deal. Someone, somewhere has designated July to be national grilling month. And with that designation comes some important grilling tips. But before we get to those, the U.S. Fire Administration says the nation’s backyard cookouts causes about 5,700 fires each year and damages amount to $37 million.

Worse, there are an average of 100 injuries and 10 deaths.

Before you grill make sure your grill hasn’t been recalled. Check it for cracks, holes and see if it’s brittle. If your grill has burners, make sure there are no blockages to them. Check for leaks and leaking. Cover your grill and keep propane tanks stored away from the home.

Here are some grillng tips:

1. Always have your grill on level ground or a level surface

2. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby when grilling

3. Once you light it, never move the grill

4. Do not let children or pets near or around your grill

5. Whoever is grilling should wear a heavy apron and oven mitts that cover the forearm

6. Only use lighter fluid that is specifically designed for grilling

7. Never grill indoors or in an enclosed area

8. Make sure the grill is cooled completely before storing
