Mergers & Acquisitions Down 10% in 2024 — So Far

Optis Partners tracks mergers and acquisitions. Through three quarters, the 2024 numbers of mergers and acquisitions dropped 10% when compared to 2023. In 2023 between the first of the year and the end of the third quarter there were 594 of them. The 2024 number is 535.
Deal activity is 11% below the five-year average.
Optis said there were 198 deals in the third quarter. That’s up 14% from the second quarter’s 173 and 21% more than the 164 seen in the first quarter of 2024.
Private equity-backed-hybrid buyers did 73% of all the acquisitions in the third quarter. Another 17% were done by private parties. Publicly held brokers and others accounted for just 10% of them.
The most acquisitions were done by BroadStreet Partners. They did 68. Hub International had 39 and Inszone Insurance Services accounted for 38.
Over half of the deals — 292 — were done by the 10 most active businesses. That’s 55% of the total done in the third quarter.
