Mergers & Acquisitions in 2023 — A Big Drop from 2022

Clyde & Co. LLP helps with business acquisitions and mergers. It also tracks M&A activity in various industries. In our case, it is insurance. Company spokesman, Peter Hodgins said worldwide, the insurance sector saw a drop from 449 deals in 2022 to 346 deals in 2023.
In the U.S. — where most of the M&A activity is located — there were 162 completed deals in 2023, down from 236 in 2022. While it is a drop, things picked up a bit in the second half of the year with 83 completed deals compared to 79 in the first half of the year.
Hodgins said high inflation is a worry, and transaction funding has been tough to find.
“In the face of this market uncertainty, dealmakers have remained in wait-and-see mode, with a negative impact on overall transaction volume in 2023,” Hodgins said.
He — and Clyde & Co. officials — think deal activity has now reached the bottom of the current cycle and it should pick up through 2024 and moving into 2025.
