Most People have Jobs that Don’t Match Financial Needs

A study from Gallup on wages and found over half of us have jobs we don’t think are all that good. And way too many of us say we don’t make enough money each month to make ends meet.

Gallup found just 40% of workers in the U.S. have jobs that match their basic financial needs. They don’t have jobs that make them feel safe and respected, or where they can grow their skills and have a voice in decisions that affect them. These jobs lack control over their time and work.

“Quality jobs are linked to better outcomes at work and in life,” Gallup’s report concluded. “Employees in quality jobs report substantially better outcomes across nearly every aspect of their well-being, including life satisfaction, happiness and health.”

  • 30% of employees contend they are struggling financially
  • 29% say they’re just getting by, or find it difficult to get by
  • 43% say they are doing okay
  • 27% say their job situation allows they to live comfortably

As for the job itself:

  • 25% don’t see any opportunity for advancement
  • 20% say their company doesn’t offer advancement opportunities
  • Most employees find mentorship and training an uneven proposition
  • Barely over half of employees report getting any kind of training in the past year
  • Most of the over half getting training work for larger companies

Here’s more:

  • A large percentage of employees feel they are left out of important work decisions
  • 55% have limited voice on decisions involving technology
  • 48% do not have a say about conditions at work
  • 24% feel they’re treated unfairly because of their identity
  • 52% of non-binary report unfair treatment
  • 47% of neurodivergent employees report unfair treatment
  • 41% of Middle Eastern and North African employees report unfair treatment
  • 36% of LGBTQ+ employees report unfair treatment

Work schedules:

  • 62% say they have unstable and unpredictable work schedules
  • 54% often — or sometimes — work longer than planned on a schedule
  • 71% do — however — have the freedom to decide how to do their jobs
