New Mexico Legislature Looks at Making Medical Marijuana a Health Insurance Requirement

Published March 18, 2025 at 2:06 PM · News Releases and Bulletins

The PIA Western Alliance state of New Mexico’s House of Representatives is looking at House Bill 527 that says health insurers should consider medical marijuana as an insured drug like it does with other prescriptions.

That means the insurer will have to reimburse a policyholder, or an authorized dispensary, for medical marijuana purchases. The bill says the insurer must make sure a patient always has at least a three month supply.

House Bill 527 faces an uphill battle because this session of the New Mexico Legislature is a 60-day session that ends on March 22nd. So even if it passes the House, the bill will struggle to get through the Senate and to the governor’s desk for a signature by the end of the session.
