Obesity in 2025 — Numbers in the PIA Western Alliance States
Published November 4, 2025 at 10:46 AM · News Releases and Bulletins

Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) took a look at obesity data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and found the number of adults considered obese with rates at 35% or above declined in 2024.
Just 19 states had 35% of above considered obese. That’s down from 23 states in 2023.
The TFAH data came from the CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and from data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2021 to 2023.
While obesity dropping in several states is good news, the totals still show about 40% of us are considered obese.
These are the reports highlights:
- West Virginia (41.1%), Mississippi (40.4%) and Louisiana (39.2%) had the highest obesity rates in 2024
- The lowest level are found in Colorado (25.0%) and the PIA Western Alliance state of Hawaii (27.0%)
- The highest obesity rates are blacks (49.9%) and Latino adults (45.6%)
- Rural communities tend to have the highest rates
- People with college degrees tend to have lower obesity levels than those without
- Obesity rates are rising among children age 2-19 at just over 21%
- These rates are triple those of the 1970s
