Oregon — New High-risk Wildfire Area Rules
Published January 14, 2025 at 1:43 PM · News Releases and Bulletins

The fires in California have brought attention to new rules in the neighbor to the North. Oregon has new laws on the books affecting homes in the wilderness-urban interface (WUI), and other fire prone areas. The state’s new wildfire hazard maps will require homeowners to reduce vegetation and stricter building and remodeling codes are also in the new rules.
The new regulations on vegetation will impact about 6% of the state’s 1.9 million tax lots. That number is down from the map released, and then recalled, in 2022.
The new building, defensible space codes will impact 106,000 tax lots. New construction on those lots will require homes and buildings to have fire-resistant features. People making upgrades like new siding or roofs to homes — and in wildfire prone areas — will be required to adhere to those rules.
