Here’s the Oregon ballot title: The People for the Elimination of Animal Cruelty Exemptions (PEACE) Act. If the voters pass it in November, hunting for deer or elk, fishing for Salmon or other fish will be a criminal offense. Killing animals for food would not be allowed if this law passes.

Bye, bye farming. Passage of IP28 will ban farming cattle, chickens, turkeys, or any animal for food, and lab research. Artificial insemination for milk cows or other animals will be banned nor will you be able to trim the horns on a cow or a bull.

Under this proposed law, you can’t even do catch and release a fish because of the trauma the hook causes the fish.

Take it a couple of steps farther, the law makes it illegal to trap and kill mice but will it apply to euthanizing a very old, suffering dog or cat, or a dog or cat suffering from an injury, or cancer or any number of issues.

By the way, Oregon’s animal cruelty law already bans causing intentional injury to animals.

To help offset the loss of food for consumers, IP28 has a “Humane Transition Fund” installed within the proposed law. It will allow a newly formed “Transition Oversight Council” to give people help with food assistance via cash or gifts of food. The state will also open state-operated grocery stores to help with the disruption.

By the way, the farming of animals brings $4.4 billion into Oregon’s economy every year and employs over 32,000 people. Sport fishing and hunting brings $1.9 billion into the state coffers each year.

The organizers have enough excess signatures to guarantee it will be on the November ballot.
