Ransomware Attacks Growing

Ransomware

The insurer Travelers says ransomware attacks in the first quarter of 2026 were very close to an all-time record for a quarter. There were 2,405 reported ransomware attacks just 2% off of the record that was set in the fourth quarter of 2025. It was up 7% over the fourth quarter of 2024.

Sadly — and very frightening — Travelers notes ransomware claims grew by 80% between 2022 and now.

The company points to 84 active ransomware groups hitting on businesses and individuals in the first quarter of this year. It’s the highest number since 2020. Last year there were 70 attack groups operating in the first quarter.

It’s difficult to catch them. Nullify one and another pops up. More actors mean a greater number of attacks.

So why the increase? AI in the workplace. It’s as simple as that. Travelers’ data points to 43% of American workers now using AI on the job. Companies just aren’t ready for the challenges that puts upon them.

The report urges employers to begin monitoring and — if needed — restricting AI use in the workplace. Have some rules and oversight.
