Taxes — States with the Highest & Lowest Rates

Published March 24, 2026 at 1:29 PM · News Releases and Bulletins

Depending on when you read this, the April 15th tax deadline day is about three weeks away. It’s a pretty stressful time for most of us.

On average, each U.S. household pays about $14,000 a year in federal income taxes. Add state and local taxes to that, and the tax burden for most of us is significant. A new report says those living in the most expensive states pay almost twice as much as those living in the cheapest states.

And just because a state doesn’t have an income tax, that doesn’t mean the citizens dwelling within pay far fewer taxes than those states with an income tax. The PIA Western Alliance state of Washington is a good example. Residents of the Evergreen State pay an average of 9% of their annual income on sales taxes and excise taxes.

WalletHub recently looked at taxes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Spokesman Chip Lupo said the WalletHub research found which denizens of what states pays the most and who pay the least.

“Every year during tax season, Americans are reminded of just how much of their hard-earned income isn’t theirs to keep,” Lupo said. “Living in the right state can ease the stress of tax time, though, as taxpayers in the least expensive states pay less than half as much as those in the most expensive states.”

Here’s what the WalletHub study assumes:

  • The average annual income is $81,211
  • The average taxpayer owns a home valued at $332,700
  • The value of the average taxpayer’s automobile is $29,100
  • The average of state at local tax rates is 11.02%
