The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Wants to End Race & Sex Data Reporting

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has voted 2 to 1 to end the requirement of companies with 100 or more employees to report the race and sex of their workers. EEO-1 — as it is known — has been in effect since 1966 and is part of the 1960s push for civil rights.

The proposal will also do away with the same requirements for unions, state and local governments and public schools. What it doesn’t do is end the requirement to collect and keep such records.

EEOC Chair Andrea Lucas, a President Trump appointee, said this kind of sorting drives discrimination and mostly against white people and men. He wants them to now be “colorblind.”

More liberal groups want to keep the requirements and have spoken out against the proposal but business groups say this is a burdensome exercise that has no benefit for workers nor businesses.

The EEOC said rescinding this order will save employers $275 million a year and cut the cost of operating the EEOC by $4 million a year.
