The Highest Cost of Living in the U.S. — 7 of the Top 15 are PIA Western Alliance Cities

The cost of living is tough these days. That’s the case all over the United States. In some cities, however, things are even tougher and even breaking even requires near super-human strength and resourcefulness.

A recent study by 247 Tempo looked at all cities in the country and compiled statistics for the 15 hardest cities to make ends meet. Seven of them are in the PIA Western Alliance, and six of the top 10 are the PIA Western Alliance cities of San Francisco (2), Honolulu (3), San Diego (6), Los Angeles (7), Seattle (8) and Sacramento (9).

Portland, Oregon ranks 14th.

The 247 Tempo survey looked at the cost of housing, utilities costs, grocery prices and the average income of people living in the 20 cities.

1. New York City, New York — Population: 8,258,035

The average salary per year: $77,996 in Brooklyn, $78,277 in Manhattan and $67,000 in Queens.

The average price of a home:

Brooklyn — $799,000

Manhattan — $1,500,000

Queens — $800,000

The cost to rent:

Brooklyn — $2,770

Manhattan — $3,500

Queens — $3,400

2. San Francisco, California — Population: 808,988

The average salary per year: $84,017

Purchase a home: $1,260,086

Average monthly rent: $3,400

Electricity average per kWh: 34 cents

3. Honolulu, Hawaii

Population: 341,778

The average yearly salary: $70,023

Home purchase: $791,520

To rent: $2,650

The average cost of electricity per kWh: 46.52 cents

The average price of a home: $850,272
