Published August 26, 2025 at 1:36 PM · News Releases and Bulletins

The property data management firm, Cotality did a study of 14 states in the West and found 2.6 million homes are at risk. Those in high risk areas number over one million. Reconstruction costs for the homes totals a staggering $1.3 trillion.
Half of the 2.6 million homes — 1.3 million — are in the PIA Western Alliance state of California.
Colorado ranks second at 319,000, Texas is third with 243,000 and the PIA Western Alliance states of Oregon and Arizona are fourth and fifth with 128,000 and 124,000 respectively.
The most at risk metro areas of the 15 metro areas in the 14 states, are in California. The Golden State has eight of the 15.
Adding to California’s woes are insurers who quit writing policies, or reduced the number of policies written causing homeowners to go to the state’s insurer of last resort, the FAIR Plan. It has 452,000 policies in effect in 2024.
