U.S. Government wants Edison to Pick up the Tab for its LA Wildfire Costs

Published September 9, 2025 at 1:53 PM · News Releases and Bulletins

The U.S. government has has filed suit in a California federal court to force Southern California Edison to pay its costs for helping put out wildfires. The feds are blaming the utility for causing the fires including January’s Eaton Fire.

It killed over a dozen people and destroyed thousands of homes and businesses.

The government hasn’t stopped there. It’s also seeking reimbursement for the Fairview Fire that happened in 2022 just east of Los Angeles. It killed two people and burned 28,000 acres.

Both incidents — the government contends — were caused by issues with its power towers due to lack of maintenance and other factors.

The suit wants costs of helping put out the Eaton fire and rehabilitating 8,000 acres of U.S. forest land. The value of the trees and property in that land is over $40 million.
