Universal Healthcare — A Survey

A couple of weeks ago, Weekly Industry News published a story on the real costs of universal healthcare. In this country we call it Medicare for all. The source of our story was a couple of researchers in Canada who pinpointed how, financially, expensive for the nation’s citizens.
In the United States, some politicians — mostly on the progressive left — have been pushing Medicare for All as a solution to increasingly expensive health insurance. A recent survey from the health policy research firm, Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) finds a growing number of us want to go that direction.
• Today, 66% of those polled favor the idea
• In 2020 that figure was 53%
• 32% strongly favor Medicare for All
• 34% somewhat favor universal healthcare
• 15% somewhat oppose the idea
• 19% strongly oppose Medicare for All
Breaking it down politically:
• 84% of Democrats favor Medicare for All
• 72% want a nationalized plan
• Just 34% of Republicans want universal healthcare in the U.S.
A poll by Axios-Ipsos had results that were a bit lower:
• 43% support Medicare for All
• 24% oppose the idea
• 32% are unsure
• 62% of Democrats want it enacted
• 47% of independents support the idea
• 52% of Republicans oppose it
The Axios-Ipsos poll also addressed why many of us consider this a good idea.
• 69% are worried about the rising cost of healthcare
• 69% say a 10% jump in insurance costs will financially hurt them and/or their family
• In 2024, Americans received $75 billion in loans to pay medical bills
• Most borrowed over $500
