Update: Berkshire Hathaway Owned PacifiCorp Suit

Courts found Berkshire Hathaway’s PacifiCorp guilty of causing massive wildfires in Oregon in 2020. In 2023 a jury hit the company with a $500 million settlement for 90 plaintiffs. Over 1,900 other victims have yet to address juries in their cases.

The judge hearing those cases has put together a hectic schedule of 160, back-to-back, jury trials over the next two and a half years. That rush of trials “imperils the operations of an essential public utility on which millions of customers depend,” PacifiCorp said in a statement and it threatens to “impose a crushing financial burden.”

The company said the ongoing cases, and the $500 million settlement, could end up hampering PacifiCorp’s ability to get power to hundreds of thousands of Oregonians.
