The United States Senate voted last week to block California’s rule to ban the same of new gas-powered vehicles by 2035. At the time this is being written, President Trump has not signed the measure but he is expected to do so.
California’s Legislature passed the law a few years ago and was the first in the nation to do so. Other states have followed.
The PIA Western Alliance states of Washington, Oregon and New Mexico have adopted electric vehicle mandates as has Colorado, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Maryland, and D.C.
The Trump administration has been very vocal about California’s rule. Planning is the issue. The administration and Republicans say this is very costly for consumers and puts pressure on an energy grid that isn’t prepared.
“America cannot meet these impossible standards –- not next year, and not in 10 years,” Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso, who is the second-ranking Republican in the Senate, stated.
John Bozzella is the president and CEO of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation. He said there is a huge gap between the vehicles consumers are purchasing and the rules that California has pushing a transition.
“The fact is these EV sales mandates were never achievable,” Bozzella said.
