Through last week, 25,560 fires have burned 1,881,436 acres. The 10-year average is 17,713 fires that burn close to 1 million acres. There were 24,868 fires that burned 1,024,657 acres during the same time span last year.

Much of the activity is in the South with Florida, Georgia and North Carolina experiencing an increase in wildfires.

AccuWeather thinks the possible weather phenomenon, El Nino is going to cause 5.5 million to 8 million acres to burn this year.

The Global Wildfire Information System says around the world 150 million hectares have burned. That’s double the seasonal average for this period.

By the way, 85% of all wildfires in the United States are caused by careless people and are considered preventable.
