Wildfire — Reno’s Hawk Fire Possibly Human Caused

As with all wildfire stories, this one is evolving. By the time you read this the Hawk Fire near Reno, Nevada will either be an even more serious wildfire or it will be closer to under control.

Over the weekend the fire burned over 15,000 acres (23.4 square miles) and put 90,000 people on evacuation alert and led to over 63,000 people actually evacuating.

To date, 30 homes have been destroyed. Fortunately, no deaths.

At the time this is written, the fire is 27% contained. Officials and citizens are breathing a sigh of relief but remain cautious. Power is back on for 3,000 homes and businesses but over 7,000 are still without power. Over 100 NV Energy structures were damaged or destroyed so it may be awhile before power is back on for all.

Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Chief Richard Edwards said the fire’s cause is still under investigation. However, it is likely human caused. Whether it’s unintentional or not is the question. The fire is — however — the third such fire in the area in the last two weeks.
